Speech Therapy at Home with Mom

H ome is where it's at. That's my goal anyways. Home school, home birth, home cooking, home boyeeeees... okay that last one was just making sure you weren't dozing off already. Wait a minute, speech therapy at home? Super Star Speech was created by Deborah Lott, a licensed Speech language pathologist with a Master's degree in Education/ Speech Pathology, and she says you can work with your kids from home.

You mean, I don't have to be licensed and know what the heck I'm doing. Or at least know enough to fake it? (I felt like this before we decided to home school) My momma always said "Fake it til ya make it". This philosophy really can only get you so far. However, it can also push you in the right direction. I think what my mom meant was to keep going, don't let your inexperience keep you from trying. I'm grateful for my blog for that very reason. Plus I get some really great opportunities to review great products that can help real families with real problems.

I've got four kids (I know you know already know this) and for the most part they've all spoken very clearly from a very early age. Of course I had girls first so the rules got thrown off the cliff once my little boys came into the picture. Lil man, my oldest son, is 30mos old. He didn't start talking freely until right after his 2nd birthday and now the boy won't hush. With each child has come a new language for me to learn. Lil Man says the (ee) sound where (errr) should be. It really is adorable, how can you not smile when you hear,

"thundy skeys me"(thunder scares me) or

  "latey, I going to week" (later, I'm going to work).

I know not to repeat him and try to correct him but he gets pretty frustrated when he doesn't get right then. The Hubs would say he's impatient like his momma. It seems this will be a long process but I am determined and we definitely can't afford Speech Therapy right now or anytime soon.

I love how you are supposed to get out a mirror to practice. Lil Man puckers his lips up so cute to pronounce the (errr) sounds. I have to stop myself every time from kissing his cutie tootie lips. Wonder why some kids do speak 'funny'? We've never spoken to our kids like babies. I think this helps enormously. Some of our family still will speak to my girls with that silly baby talk. "Does baby want somesing too eat". It really does more harm than good.

I'm not talking about silly voices, we do that. I'm talking about serious change in tone and pronunciation when talking to babies and/or toddlers. We are the teachers, save yourself some money and time.

I received 2 audiobooks from No-Work Spanish; Yaks March on Washington (single-CD) and Poster Girl (2-CDs). We have a 45 minute compute whenever we get in the car to go anywhere so I knew this would be a fun way to introduce Spanish to my kids. It also helped me realize how much and little I've retained. My kids range in age from 7 to 6 months. As you can imagine their skill levels are all over the place. Got Bad Breath? Ouch *Giveaway* Closed

great kids book is only as good as it lasts. That's why I love sturdy books that can take a beating or MP3s. I've gotten to receive the book Five Little Bunnies from Twin Sisters Productions. A thick die cut book and CD set great for ages 0-6. Twin Sisters mission is to be The Leader in Children's Educational Music and sent me this book for the purpose of this review.

My 6 year old reads at a 7 or 8 year old level but she enjoys reading to her younger sibs. My 4 year old is beginning to read on her own and with simple and predictable sentences she can read this book on her own. I recently wrote about my Lil Dreamy turning 2. This is the same little guy that has learned most of the alphabet by himself with the help of a laptop one of his sisters gave him. His persistent button pushing ran down the batteries but more importantly has given him great confidence and a huge head start.

Who has time to read nowadays? That's what I had been thinking back in June when I first began this blog. A LONG time ago I'd read books well into the night with a flashlight under my blankets fighting my eyelids who desperately wanted to close just to finish the chapter, page, or sentence. Why would I do that? To escape into another place and be transformed into another time. I'm now in mommy time where every minute is no longer my own. Time has gotten even more precious, specifically night time. This momma needs sleep and with a newborn who's days and nights are flipped, it ain't happenin'.

Books - I've been privileged to be be a part of a select few to review a media package from KingstoneMedia.com. In that packaged I received a book titled Sudan. Ever since I've picked it up it's been really hard to put back down. I have to say I'm a bit behind on bringing this review live with the early birth of my 4th child. After starting this book waking up in the middle of night to feed lil turkey also encompassed me reading a few chapters. Captivating can't really describe the story that is being told about a place so very far away from me. The actual location is miles away but I also mean the culture is far from me, the slavery, the trafficking, the brutality is so far from me it's hard to fathom it exists. I'm an African-American, Black, those titles have always seemed funny to me. Whatever you call it my skin color matches that of the girl on the cover of this book. People of all races and colors have been persecuted all over the world. I just never thought now, in the 21st century it'd still be going on. At first I had to make myself start this book because I was unsure of what it was about but now I've seen with my eyes what is going on so far away.

  Sudan was written by Art Ayris and Ninie Hammon and based on a true story. The excitement is unreal, the possibilities of hope in some situations, then the absence of hope in others. Sudan describes a moment in time, decades of violence have already played out. The government is helping to cleanse out a people to be thought as less than. The devastation is huge and unimaginable. Slavery, mutilations, murder, child endangerment, it's all so brutal. There has been a war of sorts going on between the North Nomads (arab/muslims) and the South Tribals (non-arab/muslims). The Sudanese government helped the North raid in Darfur by providing arms and planes to attack the villages of the tribals. This book brings you a vantage point from all sides making sure there's an understanding if what is really going on. Politicians, Tribesmen, Tribeswomen, Tribal Children, Muslim Slave Traders/Militia, and Muslims against it all, Activists, and more.

   What I've found since researching about Sudan is this has been going on for decades, recently there seems to be hope in the political stance but still so many people have been hurt. I hope you get a chance to read this story for yourself. You will find yourself crying for those who have no more tears. You'll feel almost as helpless as those who are taken away from their families. I seriously can't believe what is going on on the world today, 2010. From beginning to end you hope all goes well but towards the end you are left with a wonder hope even exists. It does! Search online, find out what you can do. Do something! Yes we have the same sorts of things going on right here in the United States. I don't necessarily think it's the government's job to police the world but "we the people" of our nation, the church, CAN do something. Find out how you can help. Watch this trailer for the book then search for other videos.

Comics - Along with this book I also received some pretty outstanding comics and other products from Kingstone Media. I was super surprised at how much I got but feel so blessed to have the material I know will be a go-to for years to come. The comics are what you'd expect for all the worldly super heroes. Except these are God-centered with heroes being Moses, Jesus, and stories from Revelation. Ever wondered how Comics are made? Now you know. Just look at these illustrations. Amazing talent paired with God's word is such a great thing to see.

     

Note: These may be too graphic for little ones and some topics are a bit advanced too. For example while reading The Christ, Volume 1, a story about Jesus' birth, I found myself skipping over why Joseph wouldn't have wanted to marry Mary when he learned of her early pregnancy. I'm glad we have this story because it will serve as a great tool for future lessons. The kids love the pictures and I love the realness it offers. The manger was not this nice clean room Jesus was born in a dirty place and it's illustrated very well here.

Movies - All around there are just some great things coming out of Kingstone. The Touch is a movie that may come across as low budget (let's face it, this isn't Paramount) but the story is real and has touched so many including me. This story is a true one as well shedding light on what it takes to pick your life up after its shattered into pieces. The church in the movie is a real and located in Leesburg, FL.

"Most churches are just glorified country clubs, "

Such a profound statement and comes from the movie. It was also said by the real pastor at the church. I have a home church that I've attended for the past ten years and I hope I don't fall in that category. I don't know what is so terrible about country clubs, if I could afford it I might join, Church, however, should never come with a cost.

"The Church" is supposed to be a hospital the poor, needy, and orphaned come to for healing at no charge. Hannah, the main character in this movie, has seen some truly dark times in her life. She needs healing and comes to a place where people were supposed to help her. Instead some didn't want to "get their hands dirty" and didn't see the hurting people Hannah and the other women were. What a great story. I have my heart set on a sequel (if there is one) and a film adaptation of Sudan. Although these are heart-wrenching stories they are real. They need to be told so we know what evils are laying in weight and trying to hide away from the masses.

Adventures in Odyssey: Cause & Effect *Home-Mom Review

ow do you and your family spend time in the car? We usually have music blaring or it's mommy-daddy-talk time since we rarely are uninterrupted at home. The kids know once we get in the car they must talk only to each other unless they really need something. This isn't because we are mean parents, their seats are really far back and having to turn around every few minutes to settle it is crazy. I was really excited to receive the Adventures in Odyssey: Cause & Effect CD series and knew the car would be a perfect place to try it out. It is geared towards ages 8-12 but really something the entire family will enjoy.

Here's a snippet...

The kids loved it but the surprising part was how much Dreamy and I liked it. At first I was thinking this was really cheesy and I'd have to zone out for our over 45 min car ride into town but I found myself really following the story and imagining all the scenes. It's been a while since I've listened to an audio drama and I seriously can't wait to finish the rest of the stories. If you follow this particular series then you're all to familiar with the characters. Never heard of AIO? Here are some helpful ways to use this series.This excerpt is from the publisher's website.

The Next Great Move of God: Christians Returning to Their Hebraic Roots - Book Review

ften I have thought about the difference between the Jewish faith and Christianity. I remember a conversation I had on the bus with a boy who was Jewish and we discussed how he didn't believe Jesus was the Messiah and how I did. That is pretty deep for some seven-year-olds but that was one of the first times I realized other people believed other things.

Author and Pastor Dr. LaSalle Vaughn has written The Next Great Move of God-Christians Returning To Their Hebraic Roots. This book asks the question,"Have you ever considered the Jewishness of Jesus?" As early as seven I've considered this. The Jewish people are obviously special to God throughout the bible. God chose his people and son through them. This book brings the two together stating we must understand who Jesus was through Hebrew eyes to understand who he is.

This book did seemed a bit scattered or unorganized at times to me but I think it was due to the fact that it's so packed-full of amazing information that really translates a lot of the Hebrew meanings and roots of words to better understand the bible. Never the less it is very interesting to learn things I never would have even considered. It is very important to really research the word and fully understand what it means to be able to stand on it.

I love what this verse says:

Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. 

Acts 17:11 NIV

We are to not only receive the word but really examine it and The Next Great Move of God-Christians Returning To Their Hebraic Roots does just that and has shed some light on the meaning of a lot of things such as the menorah, Hanukkah, the Torah, and more. I'll be researching and referencing back to this book and glad to have it in my library.

y pants are always getting adjusted and have been for the past 8.5 months. I am 35 weeks pregnant with under 30 days to go. I have not yet gotten to try the belly bands, the tummy sleeves, or the fashion tummy tubes everyone always raves about. Those are great for hiding the belly bulge but what about the backside? All the bending, kneeling, squatting that I did I'd pretty much hike up my underwear rather than show everyone my backside. Showing off my underwear was not something I wanted to do but I figured at least other moms would understand. Another mom did and she invented PocketDots. nce this bible came out of the package I knew I'd have a problem. Two Princesses, One Princess Bible, you do the math. I had a pouter for a few moments but that soon faded like most pout fits do. If you have a little girl the one thing you want them to know is how beautiful they are and how valuable they are; not only to you and your inner family but to God their creator. From the pictures to the short stories their importance to this vast kingdom is reiterated throughout.

My Princess Bible is a strong sturdy board book written by Andy Holmes and was just released this past month. Sturdy is such a great way to describe these pages, they are very thick and will hold up well with my 4 year old. She has been wanting her own bible for quite some time and it was really awesome to be able to give her this beautiful book. My Princess Bible is based on the popular format of My Pajama Bible. This book combines princess-like art of women of the Bible with the virtues that make these woman so great. The art reflects that of the current princesses we are used to seeing, modern looking but with the garments worn in their own times. Women like Esther, Hannah, Eve, etc. Each story ends with the traits of that specific princess and you can even replace your child's name and speak those same traits over your own daughter.

For little girls 0-4 this book is wonderful in creating that Princess mindset that you want to impart on your daughter. Princesses are not spoiled, get anything they want prissy missies. They care for others, love themselves, and are world changers. These two will definitely change the world.

Kids 'N' Pets - Home-Mom Review

New house, kids, dogs, and husbands who don't take their shoes off will never coincide with immaculate carpet. Or can it? The house we purchased had some really hideious carpet through out but New "white" carpet was placed in the downstairs living room and eating area. Really? I have 3 kids, at the time 3 dogs, and a dirty boot wearing hubby who bless his heart kept forgetting to leave his muddiness at the door. My kids apparently forgot to not be kids and pets are well, pets. I pride myself on my DIRTY carpet, or else how would I provide you with the most extensive review for a carpet cleaner? Gotta look at the bright side.

Before & After
I took pictures of my entry way of a pretty noticable spot and in just seconds the stain was gone. I had tried to clean my carpet before and was left with clean spots on a dirty carpet. This product is amazing!

What I did:

I shook the bottle then poured Kids 'N' Pets directly on the stain. I saw progress immediately but let it sit for 5 minutes I rubbed the spot/area with a microfiber towel and it Worked! If necessary you are to repeat until the stain is gone. For more difficult stains allow Kids 'N' Pets to work for a full hour.
